Who's behind it
ScanOrigin is a project by a retired Canadian individual who is a hobby developer. It is built for the love of it: a clean, simple way to check who actually makes the products on the shelf, without paywalls or data harvesting.
Your privacy
No accounts, no profile. There are no logins, and we don't keep a record of what you scan or search.
What gets sent to answer you. To look something up, the barcode or brand name goes to the services that find the answer: our own lookup server, public product databases (like Open Food Facts), a public company register (GLEIF), Wikipedia, and an AI service (Google Gemini) that checks who owns a brand. We send only the barcode or brand name (plus the basic connection details any website sees), never your name or anything we could link back to you.
No data selling. Ever. Nothing you scan or search is sold, shared for advertising, or used to target you.
Visit counts. We use Umami, a privacy-friendly counter with no cookies and no tracking across websites. It counts visits, scans and app installs — not what you scanned. If your browser asks sites not to track you, we don't count you at all.
Feedback form. If you send feedback, the name, email and message you type go to our form service (Formspree) so we can reply.
